(AP) — A suspected gunman was in custody following a shooting at Los Angeles airport that killed a TSA officer and wounded two others. This is what AP reporters on the scene Friday are learning about the events unfolding:

HONORS FOR SLAIN OFFICER

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has asked that flags on city buildings be flown at half-staff and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck has asked officers to wear black bands on their badges to honor the TSA officer who was killed.

___

SLAIN OFFICER IDENTIFIED

The Transportation Security Administration has identified the officer killed at LAX as Gerardo I. Hernandez, 39. He's the first officer killed in the line of duty in the agency's 12-year history.

No other details were released about Hernandez or the two other TSA officers who were wounded.

___

TSA ADMINISTRATOR'S MESSAGE

In an email to TSA employees Friday evening, TSA Administrator John Pistole said he would be traveling to Los Angeles on Saturday to meet with the "family of our fallen comrade" and the injured employees who are recovering from their wounds. He'll also spend time with the TSA workforce at LAX.

"Together, we will get through this," Pistole wrote. "Our faith will guide us and our professionalism will ensure our ability to carry out our mission."

___

OBAMA CALLS WITH CONDOLENCES

President Barack Obama called Pistole to express his condolences to the families and friends of the TSA officer who was killed and the two others who were wounded.

Obama said he is grateful for all the brave TSA personnel who protect the nation's transportation systems, the White House said in a statement. Obama also spoke with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to express his gratitude for those who responded to the shooting.

___

NOTE CONTAINED HATE FOR TSA

A law enforcement official says the handwritten note in the suspected gunman's bag refers to how he believed his constitutional rights were being violated by TSA searches and he's a "pissed-off patriot" upset at former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

___

DETAILS ON INJURIES

Los Angeles Fire Department Battalion Chief Armando Hogan says five people were taken to hospitals after the shooting: the gunman, the TSA officer who died, two other people who were shot, and one person with a broken ankle. A sixth person was treated at the scene for ringing in the ears from gunfire.

The TSA said both surviving shooting victims are TSA officers.

___

SHOOTER HAD MORE AMMO

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says the airport shooter was carrying a lot of additional ammunition. "There were more than 100 more rounds," he said.

___

PASSENGERS ON WAY BACK IN

As two terminals reopened, hundreds of passengers pulled rolling suitcases across a road outside the facilities, standing shoulder-to-shoulder across all four lanes. Motorcycle police with megaphones followed slowly behind, trying to herd them onto the sidewalk.

___

HUNDREDS OF FLIGHTS AFFECTED

Airport officials say 746 flights nationwide were affected by the incident. Some 46 were diverted, and others were held at LAX or at the originating airport. Terminal 3, where the shooting occurred, remains closed as the forensics investigation continues.

___

AIRPORT SLOWLY REOPENING

Employees are being let back into two closed terminals, and taxis and buses are again running on a loop through the airport. In addition, the FAA has dropped its "ground stop" order, meaning airliners in other cities are allowed to resume flying to LAX. Nearly 200 flights were cancelled and others were diverted.

___

MORE ON VICTIMS

One of the victims taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center arrived without signs of life, says trauma surgeon David Plurad. Doctors worked for over an hour to try to revive the man, but were unsuccessful. He died from gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen. Another man was shot in the shoulder and is expected to survive.

Another person was released from Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The hospitals did not identify the patients, citing privacy issues.

___

SHOOTER'S FATHER WAS CONCERNED

A New Jersey police chief says the suspect had apparently made references to suicide. Pennsville Chief Allen Cummings says Paul Ciancia's father had called him Friday saying another of his children had received a text message from the suspect "in reference to him taking his own life." Cummings says the elder Ciancia, also named Paul, asked him for help locating his son.

___

HOTELS FLOODED WITH TRAVELERS

Travelers by the hundreds have streamed into hotels near LAX. The lobbies of the Sheraton and Radisson at the airport's entrance overflowed onto sidewalks. Ronald Dauzat, owner and headmaster of a Los Angeles private school, was on his way to Berlin for an educational conference. He had resigned himself to spending most of the day at the Sheraton. "I'm dealing with it the best I can," he said. "We just have to wait it out."

___

FIRST TSA OFFICER KILLED

Union and TSA officials say the TSA officer shot at LAX was the first ever killed in the line of duty. J. David Cox Sr., national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, says the officer was one of the behavioral detection officers stationed throughout the airport looking for suspicious behavior.

___

SOURCE: NOTE THREATENED 'TSA AND PIGS'

A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that 23-year-old suspect Paul Ciancia is from New Jersey and was wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a hand-written note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs." The official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

___

AT THE HOSPITAL

Three people are being treated at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

A hospital official says one was in critical condition and two were in fair condition. Two were wounded by gunshots and the other suffered other injuries. All are male.

Dr. Lynne McCullough, an emergency medicine physician, says the hospital was capable of taking up to 50 patients. "As it turned out, very thankfully, we received only three" patients, she said.

___

CELEBS AT LAX

James Franco was among the travelers caught up in the chaos. The actor tweeted that "some (expletive) shot up the place." His publicist confirmed Franco was on a flight that landed shortly after the shooting occurred. Singer Nick Jonas tweeted about waiting on board a plane and said he was praying for the victims.

___

SHOOTER IDENTIFIED

Law enforcement officials identify shooting suspect as 23-year-old Paul Ciancia.

___

LATEST ON VICTIMS

The Transportation Security Administration says multiple officers with the agency were shot, one fatally. The agency declined to provide further information, saying additional details would be given by the FBI and police.

___

UNION: SHOOTER NOT TSA AGENT

Tim Kauffman, a spokesman for American Federation of Government Employees, which represents 45,000 TSA screeners, says the airport shooter was not a TSA officer.

___

PARKING LOT SEARCH

Police tell KNX Radio that officers are looking at the hundreds of vehicles in the parking structure near Terminal 3 but weren't sure how the shooter got to the airport.

___

ALERTS

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says it has increased its airport patrols as a precaution in the wake of the LAX shooting. Chief Security Officer Joseph Dunne says the stepped-up patrols are not expected to affect flight operations.

___

BAM, BAM, BAM

Xavier Savant was waiting in the security line at the terminal where the shooting occurred and he and other passengers dropped to the floor in panic. He described it as a "bam, bam, bam" burst of gunfire.

"We just hit the deck. Everybody in the line hit the floor and shots just continued," he said.

He said the shots subsided and people bolted through the metal detectors and ran into the terminal, eventually making their way out to the tarmac.

"My whole thing was to get away from him," said Savant, an advertising creative director in Hollywood who was heading to New York City with his family.

___

HANDS UP

Ben Rosen, 30, was sitting at the Starbucks in Terminal 3 eating oatmeal when he heard gunfire erupt and people start running in all directions and crouching on the floor.

Police arrived with guns drawn and shouted, "This is not a drill, hands up," he said. Everyone raised their hands and were led out of the terminal.

As they were led out, they saw broken glass from a window that looked like it'd been shot out. Rosen left his bag behind.

"It was scary. I've never experienced anything like this before," he said. "I definitely felt underprepared. In retrospect, you have all these fire drills in school but you don't really have gunman drills."

___

DISBELIEF IN TERMINAL

Grant Imahara of the Discovery show "Mythbusters" was in an airport lounge area when he heard gunfire in the terminal and saw police and terrified passengers react. "It was fairly tense, and particularly after we heard the shots ring out, like 'oh my God this is really happening,'" he said.

___

HEROICS

LAX Police Chief Patrick Gannon said actions of responding officers were heroic. "They did not hesitate, they went after this individual, they confronted this individual in our airport," Gannon says.

___

START OF SHOOTING

Gannon says the gunman entered the terminal, pulled a rifle from a bag and began shooting. The gunfire continued at a screening checkpoint before he entered a secured area. Officers took him into custody after a shootout. "As you can imagine, a large amount of chaos took place in this entire incident," he said.

___

SEVEN PEOPLE TREATED

Interim Los Angeles Fire Chief Jim Featherstone says paramedics treated seven people at the scene, and six were taken to hospitals.

___

LONE GUNMAN

Gannon says there was a lone shooter who approached a TSA agent who was checking passenger documents and opened fire.

___

TSA OFFICER KILLED

Tim Kauffman, a spokesman for the American Federation of Government Employees in Washington, confirmed that a TSA officer was killed in the incident at Los Angeles International Airport. He said the union's information comes from their local officials in Los Angeles.

___

AVOID AIRPORT

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti urges public to stay away from the airport for the time being.

___

WAYLAID PASSENGERS

Evacuated passengers were loaded onto buses by the dozens, while others decided to walk off the airport grounds.

People trailing rolling suitcases were seen on the normally quiet streets and sidewalks outside LAX.

Brian Livesay, 44, said when he arrived on a business trip from Atlanta the airport seemed unusually quiet. The film and TV production designer didn't realize there was a problem until he saw heavily armed police on the airport beltway. He decided to walk the three or so miles to the rental car facilities.

"If there was anything moving on four wheels besides a police car, I would be in a cab," he said. "I have a room full of CBS executives waiting for me."

___

HOLDING PATTERN

Flights heading for Los Angeles, which had not yet taken off, were held at their gates by the Federal Aviation Administration. Others in the air — including three JetBlue flights from the East Coast — diverted to other airports.

Flight tracking site FlightAware.com said that as of 11 a.m. PDT, there were 12 flight cancellations and 132 flight delays in Los Angeles.

Travelers hoping to fly out are unable to reach Los Angeles airport because of road closures.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A gunman armed with a semi-automatic rifle opened fire at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, killing a Transportation Security Administration employee and wounding two other people in an attack that frightened passengers and disrupted flights nationwide, officials said.

Los Angeles police Assistant Chief Earl Paysinger said the unidentified suspect, who was apparently injured following an exchange of gunfire with officers, was in custody.

Tim Kauffman, a spokesman for the American Federation of Government Employees in Washington, confirmed Friday that a TSA officer was killed. Kauffman said the union's information comes from their local officials in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon said the gunman pulled what he described as an "assault rifle" from a bag and began firing. "As you can imagine, a large amount of chaos took place in this entire incident," he said.

Some passengers who already had cleared security rushed onto the tarmac to evacuate, while others were locked down in airport restaurants and lounges. The airport was being swept for precautionary measures and the bomb unit was on scene.

Air traffic was affected nationwide as the FAA grounded flights that had not yet departed for LAX.

Witness Brian Keech said he heard "about a dozen gunshots" from inside a security gate at the terminal, which has been evacuated.

Ben Rosen was sitting at the Starbucks in Terminal 3 eating oatmeal at about 9:20 a.m. when he heard gunfire erupt and people start running in all directions and others crouching on the ground. Rosen got on the ground and another passenger said "don't worry we're safe."

Then more gunshots erupted. He grabbed his phone and tried to lie down as flat on the ground as he could. Police showed up with their guns drawn, shouting, "This is not a drill, hands up."

Everyone put their hands up and then were led out of the airport terminal to the international terminal, Rosen said.

As they were led out they saw broken glass from a window that looked like it'd been shot out. Rosen left his bag behind.

"It was scary I've never experienced anything like this before," he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a "ground stop" was in affect for all flights heading to Los Angeles, meaning planes in any other airport in the country can't take off for the city, although some flights already in the air were allowed to land.

LAX air traffic controller Michael Foote said some flights were still being allowed to depart.

Foote said his colleagues in the control tower saw passengers spilling from the terminal onto the tarmac, "evacuating the building, getting out as fast as they could." Officers eventually corralled them.

Other travelers described a chaotic scene as airport security staff evacuated terminals, including onto to the tarmac. Hundreds of people remained gathered outside next to airplanes as authorities investigated what happened.

"People started saying there's a shooter, there's a shooter," said Natalie Morin, a senior at USC who was heading to San Francisco for a graduate school interview.

Emergency crews responded to a multi-patient incident, Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. Terminal 3 is home to Virgin America and other airlines.

Obama says al-Qaida now more active in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama pledged Friday to help combat an increasingly active al-Qaida in Iraq but stopped short of announcing new commitments of assistance sought by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Al-Maliki came to the Oval Office requesting additional aid, including weapons and help with intelligence, to fight insurgent violence that has spiked in Iraq since American troops left in 2011.

"Unfortunately al-Qaida has still been active and has grown more active recently," Obama said at the end of a nearly two-hour meeting. "So we had a lot of discussion about how we can work together to push back against that terrorist organization that operates not only in Iraq, but also poses a threat to the entire region and to the United States."

Al-Maliki declined to discuss the details of his request for U.S. assistance but said the meeting was "very positive."

"We talked about the way of countering terrorism, and we had similar position and similar ideas," he said.

Obama said the best way to honor those killed in the Iraq war would be to bring about a functioning democracy. Al-Maliki's critics have accused him for years of a heavy-handed leadership that refuses to compromise and, to some, oversteps his authority against political enemies. But Obama only praised the prime minister for working to include Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds.

"The main theme was that the United States wants to be a strong and effective partner with Iraq, and we are deeply invested in seeing an Iraq that is inclusive, that is democratic and that is prosperous," Obama said. "And I communicated to the prime minister that anything that we can do to help bring about that more hopeful future for Iraq is something that we want to work on."

Al-Maliki described Iraq's democracy as "nascent and fragile" but vowed to strengthen it. "It only will allow us to fight terrorists," al-Maliki said through an interpreter.

Obama said he was encouraged that Iraqi lawmakers set April 30 as the date for national elections, the country's first since March 2010. He said an election will show Iraqis "that when they have differences, they can express them politically, as opposed to through violence."

The United States already provides military aid to Iraq, the legacy of an unpopular war that cost Americans nearly 4,500 troops and more than $700 billion. The White House said among equipment the U.S. has sent since pulling troops out are military planes, helicopters, patrol boats and a surface-to-air missile battery.

Al-Maliki's visit with Obama was their first meeting since December 2011, when the Iraqi leader came to Washington six days before the last American troops left Iraq. At the time, Obama pledged the U.S. would remain committed to the government they left behind, and helped create.

The troop withdrawal came after al-Maliki's government refused to let U.S. forces remain in Iraq with the legal immunity that the Obama administration insisted was necessary to protect troops. Obama had campaigned for the presidency on ending the nearly nine-year war in Iraq and took the opportunity offered by the legal dispute to pull all combat troops out.

Sunni Muslim insurgents who had been mostly silenced under the U.S. presence lashed out once the American forces had left, angered by a widespread belief that Sunnis have been sidelined by Iraq's Shiite-led government. Indiscriminate violence has continued to rise, with the United Nations saying Friday that 979 Iraqis were killed last month alone — 852 civilians and 127 were security forces — and nearly 2,000 more injured.

"The terrorists found a second chance," al-Maliki said in a speech Thursday at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He said the violence has been fueled by the civil war in neighboring Syria, although he acknowledged that homegrown insurgents are to blame for the vast number of car bombs, suicide bombings and drive-by shootings that have roiled the nation.

The two leaders also said they discussed regional issues, including Syria and Iran. But al-Maliki said the main purpose of his visit was to enhance the Iraq's relationship and postwar agreement with the United States.

(AP) — Kim Kardashian and Kanye West sued a co-founder of YouTube on Thursday claiming he violated a confidentiality agreement by posting a video of the couple's marriage proposal to his new video-sharing website.

The couple's lawsuit states Chad Hurley wasn't invited to the elaborate Oct. 21 proposal at San Francisco's AT&T Park, but was allowed to stay because he signed an agreement not to post any video or images from the event. West allowed other cameras to film the event for possible broadcast on E! Entertainment Television, home to his fiancee's show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," according to the suit.

Hurley posted a fuzzy 2 ½ minute long video on his new website MixBit, that showed West proposing to Kardashian while an orchestra played. The video also showed the ensuing celebration with Kardashian's family and invited guests toasting the newly-engaged couple.

Kardashian and West are seeking unspecified damages from Hurley and his company, Avos Systems Inc.

"Exclusive rights, such as those sold by plaintiffs to publication of video of the event, are particularly valuable," the lawsuit states. "If people violate these rights ... they are of substantially diminished value."

A message sent through MixBit seeking comment from Hurley was not immediately returned.

West proposed to Kardashian on her 33rd birthday; the couple's first child North West was born in June.

The lawsuit was first reported by celebrity website TMZ.

Nexus 5

Orders are shipping — is one of them yours? Let us all know in this week's poll

Finally, all the crazy rumors and speculation is over. The Nexus 5 — and Kit Kat — are "officially real." You can probably tell if you've been on the Internet in the past 30 or so hours.

Everyone is talking about it, including Alex who was lucky enough to get one in his hands early this morning. For most of us though, we have to experience it all from what the lucky few are telling us. Which, so far, is looking awful damn good for the most part. Alex tells me it's pretty much the best Android phone ever. Alex knows his stuff, and has plenty of experience with some great phones. He has me excited.

I goofed. I was sure I would be able to go out Friday morning and spend a little extra to buy one retail. I was wrong, and now i have to wait. Hopefully, not too many of you did the same, but we're about to find out. We've got a poll — you'll find it in the sidebar to the right or after the break. Take a second and answer it, then get in the comments at discuss.

How to transfer data from your old iPad to your new iPad Air or Retina iPad mini

How to transfer data from your old iPad to your new iPad Air or Retina iPad mini

Everything you need to know to get all your contacts, calendars, apps, and more from your old iPad onto your new iPad Air or Retina iPad mini

If you've just upgraded to a new iPad Air or Retina iPad mini from an older generation iPad, transferring all your contacts, calendars, photos, and other data couldn't be any easier if you've been creating backups with either iCloud or iTunes. Regardless what backup method you've chosen, they can make the process of getting the data from your old iPad to your new iPad virtually painless. Here's how:

How to transfer data from your old iPad to your new iPad with iCloud

If you have been backing your old iPad up to iCloud, bringing down all your data couldn't be any easier. If this is your first iPad but you own an iPhone, you can even bring down your iPhone backup and compatible items will transfer automatically.

Just follow these easy steps:

  1. After your new iPad powers on, you'll see a welcome screen, Slide your finger across the bottom where it says slide to set up.
  2. Now choose your language from the choices presented to you.
  3. Select the country or region you are in.
  4. Now choose your WiFi network and enter the password for it if there is one. If you don't have access to WiFi, you can choose Use Cellular but keep in mind, this only works if you've purchased an iPad that has cellular data connectivity. Not to mention that only some things in your iCloud backup will be restored without WiFi. Others won't be triggered until you're on WiFi. Or you can choose to restore from an iTunes backup if you have access to one.
  5. Now on the Location Services screen, choose whether you'd like to have location services on by default. Make sure you read the description of what location services are before deciding whether or not you'd like to enable or disable them. Keep in mind that certain apps like Maps need location services to operate properly.
  6. On the next screen, tap on Restore from iCloud backup and enter your credentials when asked.
  7. Now agree to the Terms and Conditions. You will be asked to verify that you agree to them a second time.
  8. If you have iCloud backups, your iPad will now show them. Tap on the backup name that you'd like to restore from.

Note that the screenshots below are from the iPhone setup process but the iPad process is exactly the same as well.

The backup process could take quite a while depending on how much stuff you're transferring. It's also worth noting that certain items such as apps, photos, and videos will only restore when on WiFi in order to not eat through your data plan. If you have to leave WiFi range before the restore is complete, don't worry, it will pick up where it left up when you enter WiFi again.

How to transfer data from your old iPad to your new iPad with iTunes

If you're coming from an older iPad that you've chosen to back up to iTunes, it's just as easy to get your data transferred to your new iPad. We understand that not everyone trusts the cloud yet and if you prefer traditional hard backups in iTunes over using iCloud, that's fine too. We can help you get all your data to your new iPad just as quick.

Just remember to make sure you're on the most current version of iTunes before continuing, especially if your old iPad isn't running iOS 7 yet.

If you don't have access to WiFi, you can choose Use Cellular but keep in mind this option is only available if you've purchases an iPad with cellular connection options. Let's not forget that only some things in your iCloud backup will be restored without WiFi. Others won't be triggered until you're on WiFi. Or you can choose to restore from an iTunes backup if you have access to one.
  5. Now on the Location Services screen, choose whether you'd like to have location services on by default.
