Sean-FCA: Computers and technology at FCA

June 2013
Hi Parents and students.

During summer, many families consider buying a laptop or other technology for their student entering the next grade. Since all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders utilize laptops or tablets at FCA for multiple classes, here are some details and suggestions as well as email details for middle school students.

FCA's computer class uses Google's free online suite of apps (called Google Docs or Google Drive). ?This means your student need to have a gmail account and know how to log in and out. ?Many incoming 6th graders have trouble remembering their password for the first few weeks; any help you can provide will be appreciated. ?If you want to write their password down and put it in their bag for the first few weeks, that might help. ?Need to setup a new gmail account? ?Visit www.gmail.com to get started; it's free.

Some parents have asked if a tablet (iPad, Nexus 7, etc) will work as a substitute for a laptop. At this point we're still requiring students to have a normal laptop. ?With a Bluetooth?keyboard attached, tablets can be useful and will probably be fully functional for a school computer within the next couple years, but as of now laptops will work better than a tablet setup.

If you want to purchase a laptop that runs Windows, there are many laptops that are around $400 that will work fine. ?A screen size near 14-15 inches is ideal. ?Battery life should be between 2 and 4 hours. ?Netbooks, a popular category a few years ago, are not recommended. ?Here are two suggestions as of Summer 2013 that are very functional and also reasonably priced:

Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-6190BLK 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black Matte with Textured Finish)

ASUS K55N-DS81 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Another suggestion is to look at the?Samsung Chromebook (Wi-Fi, 11.6-Inch)?(click to view). ?A Chromebook is designed for?environments with wireless connectivity. ?Our entire campus is covered by free wireless; if you have wifi at home, the Chromebook offers a few advantages over a traditional laptop. ?They are thin and light, have a great battery life, update themselves to the latest version automatically, and have been shown to avoid viruses better than most other systems. ?The downside? ?They don't run windows...so if your student wants to run other programs that are not on the web, they can't. ?But for a school laptop, these have worked out really well for some students.

Can my student use an Apple Mac? ?Absolutely! ?We spend most of our time in a browser, so the operating system is not as important as in years past.

Hope those suggestions get you ready for the new school year. ?Please add a comment to this post if you want to interact or have a question; you can also email me. ?Looking forward to teaching your students! ?Sean Caldwell.

(AP) ? Victoria Azarenka waited until the fourth day of the French Open for her opening match, then showed she's eager to advance.

Filling a mostly empty stadium court with her familiar shrieks Wednesday, the world's former No. 1 player beat Elena Vesnina of Russia 6-1, 6-4 in a match postponed one day because of rain. That meant Azarenka reached the second round 72 hours after some players.

"I felt like I'm one of the last ones to start," she said. "It was a long wait, but I think performance-wise it was a good match."

The Australian Open champion in each of the past two years, the No. 3-seeded Azarenka is hoping for a breakthrough at Roland Garros, the only major where she has yet to reach a semifinal.

American women went 10-5 in the first round, including Jamie Hampton's first career French Open victory, an upset of No. 25 Lucie Safarova 7-6 (5), 3-6, 9-7. Hampton hit seven aces and overcame 50 unforced errors to outlast Safarova in the 2?-hour match.

Also part of the resurgence in U.S. fortunes was No. 29 Varvara Lepchenko, who reached the third round by whacking 22 forehand winners to defeat Elina Svitolina 7-6 (5), 6-1.

"A couple years ago, we weren't even in the scene," Hampton said. "There wasn't even a group of us. We've progressed, and I think the whole group will continue to progress. We've all got really good games. We're just trying to find our way on the clay right now."

Stumbling in the second round was American Mallory Burdette, who lost to No. 4-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3, 6-2. Burdette committed 28 unforced errors to five four Radwanska, last year's Wimbledon runner-up.

Radwanska's sister, Urszula, flopped in the follow-up to her victory over Venus Williams, losing 6-3, 6-3 against German qualifier Dinah Pfizenmaier

On the men's side, No. 24 Benoit Paire of France delighted a partisan crowd on Court Suzanne Lenglen by rallying past Marcos Baghdatis in a rain-interrupted first-round match, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4, 6-4.

Paire, 24, acknowledged the pressure of being seeded at Roland Garros, where no Frenchman has won the title since 1983.

"Many TV channels are following me now," he said. "Also, in the past I could walk around with my parents and watch a few matches. It's no longer the case. People now tend to recognize me. It's Roland Garros, you know. They want me to go far. Does that mean more pressure on me? Yeah."

In second-round play, No. 4 David Ferrer broke serve eight times and beat fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France eliminated Jarkko Nieminen 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-3. No. 10 Marin Cilic defeated 18-year-old Australian Nick Kyrgios 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Azarenka waited in vain to play for much of the day on a rainy Tuesday, but said she wasn't flustered by the delay.

"I just really was chilling the whole day, watching 'The Voice,'" she said. "It was incredible. I was so entertained. There's this girl, her name is Judith. She was a duet singer with Michael Jackson. She's absolutely incredible. I mean, I have no idea how sounds like that can come out of somebody's mouth. It's just, wow."

Fans might say the same thing about Azarenka, who wore down Vesnina with her noisy but steady baseline game, committing only 13 unforced errors. Vesnina, ranked 38th, fell to 1-19 against top-five players and has yet to take a set in five matches against Azarenka.

Azarenka needed only half an hour to win the first set, fell behind in the second, then finished with several booming strokes and a fist pump. Addressing the crowd afterward, she tried to match rival Serena Williams' feat of speaking French to the spectators, but stumbled.

"I know 'Je t'aime, Paris,' and I know 'Allez,'" she told the fans with a laugh. "Merci beaucoup."

Later, Azarenka said she doesn't mind the heavily favored Williams being the focus in the women's draw.

"Serena always has attention, no matter where she is," Azarenka said. "She has been around the game so much and the No. 1 player in the world. It's usual. For me it's important to show up for my job. Whatever is going on around, it's just entertaining for people. But I'm just focused on what I do and nobody else, really."

In other first-round matches, No. 7 Petra Kvitova outlasted wild card Aravane Rezai of France, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and No. 12 Maria Kirilenko beat fellow Russian Nina Bratchikova 6-0, 6-1. No. 23 Klara Zakopalova lost to Kaia Kanepi 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Foxconn and Mozilla join hands over Firefox OS, may show off new devices next week

In a Chinese invitation we received earlier today, Foxconn Technology Group and Mozilla confirmed an upcoming press conference that will detail and make their Firefox OS partnership official. The event will take place in Taipei next Monday (just a few days before Computex truly kicks off), and it'll see Mozilla welcome the 19th partner to its Firefox OS alliance. There isn't much meat in the email, though we did spot a little hint in the rundown that says one or more "latest" Firefox OS products will be displayed. Whatever they may be, we shall keep an eye out for them as soon as we land in Terry Gou's back garden next week.

Connected Data to merge with Drobo, bring Transporter features to Drobo products

Connected Data, makers of Transporter, just announced that it's entered into a merger agreement with Drobo. As a refresher, Transporter is a cloud-based file sharing appliance that provides Dropbox-like functionality without the recurring subscription costs. Drobo's best known for its Ethernet, Thunderbolt, FireWire and USB-based multi-drive storage devices which offer seamless expandability. Presumably we'll start seeing some of Connected Data's file sharing features on upcoming Drobo products. The two companies have 30 days to finalize the merger process -- and perhaps even come up with a clever new brand. We vote for DroboPorter ourselves. PR after the break.

Ethiopian marathon runner honors Boston victims

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? The winner of the men's race at the Boston Marathon says he is returning his winner's medal to honor the city and those killed and injured in the terrorist bombings near the finish line of one of the world's top running events.

Lelisa Desisa says sport should be a pleasure and never a battlefield. He made the announcement Sunday at a ceremony with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry also honored the woman's runner-up and the men's third place finisher. All three athletes are from Ethiopia.

The April 15 explosions killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

Report: New controversy at scandal-scarred Rutgers

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? The woman hired to clean up Rutgers' scandal-scarred athletic program quit as Tennessee's women's volleyball coach 16 years ago after her players submitted a letter complaining she ruled through humiliation, fear and emotional abuse, The Star-Ledger reported Saturday night on its website.

"The mental cruelty that we as a team have suffered is unbearable," the players wrote about Julie Hermann, hired May 15 as Rutgers' athletic director after serving as the No. 2 athletic administrator at Louisville.

In the letter submitted by all 15 team members, the players said Hermann called them "whores, alcoholics and learning disabled" and they wrote: "It has been unanimously decided that this is an irreconcilable issue." The players told The Star-Ledger that Hermann absorbed the words and said: "I choose not to coach you guys."

The 49-year-old Hermann, set to take over the Rutgers' program June 17, told The Star-Ledger she didn't remember the letter. The newspaper said when it was read to her by phone Wednesday, she replied, "Wow."

Hermann, the first woman to head Rutgers' athletic program and one of three female ADs at the 124 schools that make up college football's top tier, has promised a restart for the program following the ouster of its men's basketball coach and the resignation of other officials.

She is set to replace Tim Pernetti, who quit last month after the firing of basketball coach Mike Rice. Practice videos surfaced of Rice shoving and throwing basketballs at players and yelling gay slurs at them.

"No one on the coaching staff doesn't believe that we need to be an open book, that we will no longer have any practice, anywhere at any time, that anybody couldn't walk into and be pleased about what's going on in that environment. It is a new day. It is already fixed," Hermann said at her introductory news conference.

At that news conference, Hermann was questioned about a 1997 jury verdict that awarded $150,000 to a former Tennessee assistant coach who said Hermann fired her because she became pregnant.

Rutgers' problems started in December when Rice was suspended three games and fined $75,000 by the school after a video of his conduct at practices was given to Pernetti by Eric Murdock, a former assistant coach. The video showed numerous clips of Rice firing basketballs at players, hitting them in the back, legs, feet and shoulders. It also showed him grabbing players by their jerseys and yanking them around the court. Rice can also be heard yelling obscenities and using anti-gay slurs.

The controversy went public in April when ESPN aired the videos and Rutgers President Robert Barchi admitted he didn't view the video in the fall. Rice was fired and Pernetti, assistant coach Jimmy Martelli and interim senior vice president and university counsel John Wolf resigned.

After a series of interviews with many of the former Tennessee players about Hermann, The Star-Ledger said:

"Their accounts depict a coach who thought nothing of demeaning them, who would ridicule and laugh at them over their weight and their performances, sometimes forcing players to do 100 sideline push-ups during games, who punished them after losses by making them wear their workout clothes inside out in public or not allowing them to shower or eat, and who pitted them against one another, cutting down particular players with the whole team watching, and through gossip.

"Several women said playing for Hermann had driven them into depression and counseling, and that her conduct had sullied the experience of playing Division I volleyball."

The Star-Ledger asked Hermann about the players' lingering grievances.

"I never heard any of this, never name-calling them or anything like that whatsoever," she told the newspaper. "None of this is familiar to me."

Rutgers will join the Big Ten in 2014.

Apps of the Week: Tetris Blitz, Impossible Road, Limelight, and more

Apps of the Week: Tetris Blitz, Impossible Road, Limelight, and more

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps. This week's selections include a few games, an awesome read-later app, an app for keeping track of movies, a guitar tuner, an app dedicated to a famous classic band, and app that that is sure to increase your typing speed on the iPhone.

    Pocket - Ally Kazmucha

I've tried many read it later services and up until last year, I had always used Instapaper. Then when RIL (Read It Later) transformed into Pocket and got a major overhaul, I couldn't stop myself from trying it. And I haven't looked back sense.

Pocket is absolutely gorgeous. Not only that, it's super fast and supports almost any browser and platform you could think of. Not only is there a native iPhone and iPad app, but a Mac one too. And for those who like to save things directly from their browsers, yep, there's support for those too. Even reading on the Pocket website is enjoyable.

The way content is laid out is unique and one of the best I've found so far. If you haven't tried it out yet, it's free so you've got nothing to lose.

    Limelight - Joseph Keller

Limelight is an iPhone app that helps you keep track of movies, not just those in your collection, but also those that you may have just seen in theaters, as well as those you want to see. Create an account and begin searching for movies and mark whether or not you?ve seen them. Movies will then either be added to your Watched or To Watch lists, which can be shared with other Limelight users as well as your friends, through Twitter, Facebook, iMessage, and email. You can also follow the libraries that other users publish, finding new movies that you want to see by doing so. If you see or own a lot of movies, Limelight is a great way to keep track of and share them all. Check it out on the App Store for $1.99.

    Impossible Road - Simon Sage

If Super Hexagon has taught me anything, it's that I'm a sucker for punishment. Enter the brutally difficult Impossible Road. There are no power-ups, no in-app purchases, and barely any colors or shapes. All you have to do is keep a ball on a downward-spiraling track for as long as possible using left and right tap controls. If you fall off, you've got a moment to land on the track further down, but if you free-fall for too long, you've got to start all over. Players are scored based on how many checkpoints they pass through or skip by falling off the edge and recovering. The high contrast art style and minimalist music keep tension high for the fleeting seconds you manage to stay on the track. If you have any unresolved childhood issues with Rainbow Road from Mario Kart, or have an innate fear of heights to get over revel in, Impossible Road is a good place to start.

    Guitar Tune - Chris Parsons

After being away for a couple of months, I cam home and decided I wanted to play a little guitar. I quickly realized that before I could do that, it would certainly need some tuning. For the life of me, I couldn't find my tuner so figured it would be a perfect time to try out some of the tuner apps available on iOS. I download 3-4 and began testing them out, in the end I went with a free (ad-supported) one called Guitar Tuna and well, I'm never paying for a tuner app again. Guitar Tuna is awesome, idiot proof and free. Can't really beat it. If you're looking for a basic and easy to use guitar tuning app, look no further.

    The Doors - Richard Devine

Sadly this week saw the passing of The Doors' keyboard player, Ray Manzarek. So, what better way to commemorate than by kicking back listening to their 'Best of' album and checking out the official The Doors app on the iPad.

Pictures, music, videos, lyrics, all here and only the beginning. The Doors app for iPad is filled with content about the band, how they created their sound, and even an exclusive comic that chronicles Jim Morrison's 'Incident' in Miami. A must have for all The Doors fans out there.

    TextExpander Touch - Rene Ritchie

Just over a month ago, Text Expander Touch was my pick of the week. Why am I picking it again so soon? Because Smile Software just released Text Expander Touch 2.0.

The basic overall functionality hasn't changed, and everything I used before is still what I use now -- I type in shots bits of text and TE spits out long strings of code or copy. Here's the example I used last time, typing this:

    ssocial

    Automagically gets me this:

    Twitter: http://twitter.com/imore Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/imorecom Google+: http://www.gplus.to/imore YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/imorevideo

But for the higher level nerds among us, here's what's new:

Fill-in snippets, formatted snippets (including copy and send email actions), "Insert?" menu item for macros, %\ selection range macros, and more.

In other words, the power user just got handed a bunch more power.

    Tetris Blitz - Leanna Lofte

I've always been a big Tetris fan, and Tetris Blitz is a new twist to the class game. You have two minutes to clear as many lines as possible, but instead of the traditional gameplay of rotating and dropping each piece, Tetris Blitz gives you options for placement of the pieces. You simply tap the spot you want the piece to go, or cycle through more choices. There are also power-up in Tetris Blitz that help you rack up the points. Tetris Blitz is not traditional Tetris, but I'm enjoying this new, high-paced version.

    Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Gay soccer player Robbie Rogers joins LA Galaxy

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Until about a month ago, Robbie Rogers had no interest in being one of the highest-profile openly gay athletes in the world.

Rogers didn't want the pressure or attention, and he was weary of soccer itself. After coming out and simultaneously retiring in February, the former MLS champion and U.S. national team player planned to devote himself to fashion school and family, not soccer or social change.

Rogers told The Associated Press he changed his mind when he realized how much he still loved his sport ? and how much good he could do by playing it instead of standing on the sideline.

"I don't know what I was so afraid of," Rogers said. "It's been such a positive experience for me. The one thing I've learned from all of this is being gay is not that big of a deal to people."

Rogers joined the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer on Saturday, agreeing to a multiyear contract in another step by openly gay athletes in professional sports.

The 26-year-old Rogers recently thought he would never pull on another jersey, imagining nonstop scrutiny and criticism. His concerns were eased by the strong support he received from family, fans and players, including Galaxy star Landon Donovan.

Now Rogers is eager to be more than a footnote. He is determined to thrive as the league's first openly gay player.

"People are just really growing and accepting and loving," Rogers said. "Those other things are just not that important to them. I think as the younger get older and the generations come and go, I think times are just becoming more accepting."

The two-time defending champion Galaxy traded top scorer Mike Magee to acquire Rogers, an MLS veteran who spent the last two seasons in England. He trained with the Galaxy in recent weeks and hoped to continue his career in his native Southern California. The Galaxy made it happen by giving up the popular Magee in a trade with the Chicago Fire, who held Rogers' MLS rights.

"I want to get back to soccer, which is what I love," Rogers said. "I get to do something I love, and I get to help people and be a positive role model. I'm really excited to set a great example for other kids that are going through the same thing I went through. It's a perfect world for me, a perfect world."

Coach Bruce Arena thinks Rogers already is in decent shape despite 18 months with little match experience. Arena figures Rogers could be a strong contributor to the Galaxy by July, but he could play in any upcoming match.

"Certainly the league, and I think the fans, are going to be receptive in a real positive way," Arena told the AP. "But we're not in this to pioneer social issues. We're trying to win games as a team, and we're trying to produce the best team we can. Robbie has shown us that he has the potential to still be a real good player in our league, and that's what we're hopeful of."

Rogers is mindful of the place he'll take in the culture when he steps on the field this summer, but the skilled, speedy winger is even more excited to contend for MLS titles and another chance to play the U.S. national team ? a stark contrast from his plans earlier this year when he was accepted to the menswear program at the London College of Fashion.

"I had a lot of fear to come back to the game," Rogers said, remembering countless instances of homophobia everywhere from the stands to locker rooms. "I was just afraid I was putting myself in an environment that in the past had affected my mental health because I always felt like an outcast. I felt that I couldn't be myself."

"But it's been amazing," he added. "It's been normal, just as it should be. I'm a soccer player. I happen to be gay, but I'm a professional soccer player, and I have been since I was 18, 19. ... I'm just really excited to go back to the game, and excited to deal with these stupid stereotypes that are out there with athletes and the gay community, just a bunch of different things."

He's certainly not alone in this movement. NBA veteran Jason Collins came out late last month, and Rogers spoke with Collins on the day of the center's announcement.

U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe, who plays for Lyon in France, came out last year before the London Olympics. She's expected to join the Seattle team of the new National Women's Soccer League in mid-June.

Brittney Griner, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft by the Phoenix Mercury, and Seimone Augustus of the Minnesota Lynx are among that league's openly gay players. Sheryl Swoopes, a retired WNBA All-Star and current college coach, came out in 2005 during her playing days.

But any day now, Rogers is likely to become the first openly gay male athlete to play in North America's biggest professional leagues, a fact that's still a bit surprising to both Rogers and Collins.

"I would have thought more athletes would have taken that step, I guess," Rogers said. "People have seen how accepting everyone has been of Jason's and my story. I think it's going to take just more time and more athletes coming out. It's all about seeing that it's not something to be afraid of. It's not going to hurt your career."

While MLS has a fraction of the NBA's popularity, Rogers has the potential to be more influential than Collins or featherweight boxer Orlando Cruz, who has won two fights since coming out last year. Collins is a journeyman basketball player without a contract for next season, while Rogers is an accomplished international soccer player in his prime.

Rogers won an NCAA title at Maryland in 2005 and an MLS title with Columbus in 2008 while making the all-league first team. He has played sparingly over the past two years for English clubs Leeds and Stevenage after leaving the Crew in December 2011.

But his workouts at the Galaxy's training complex in Carson, Calif., were enticing enough, even if Rogers acknowledged he's "definitely a bit rusty right now."

The Galaxy will work on getting Rogers back into top form, and they'll also support him in his conspicuous new role.

"It's going to take him a little time," said Arena, also the Galaxy's general manager. "He's got to adjust to the Galaxy. He's got to get himself in better form with the ball and his fitness. That takes time for any player, as we've witnessed with Landon over the last six to eight weeks. It's going to take some time. We hope Robbie can turn the corner quickly."

Rogers is joining his league's highest-profile team, with Donovan and Irish captain Robbie Keane leading a roster expected to contend for a third straight championship. After six years as David Beckham's home before the English midfielder's departure last December, the Galaxy know all about the spotlight that will be cast on Rogers.

"There's obviously going to be attention, and I think that we are no stranger to that," Galaxy President Chris Klein told the AP. "I think the biggest piece of this is the maturity of Robbie, and we're quite confident in that. We're there to stand behind him as an organization. He has shown to be a guy that has a tremendous amount of character and integrity, and I think he's going to fit our organization really well."

The deal is a risk for the Galaxy, who traded a beloved fan favorite for Rogers. Magee, a Chicago native, has won two titles and scored eight postseason goals in four years with the Galaxy, and he leads the club with six goals this season.

But Los Angeles is enticed by the potential of Rogers, who has played 18 times for the U.S. national team, scoring two goals. He dreams of playing for the American team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but knows it won't happen unless he excels with the Galaxy.

Rogers immediately felt comfortable training with the Galaxy and resuming his friendship with Donovan, meeting the U.S. national team star for coffee. He's also confident his attacking game on the wing can help the Galaxy, who haven't replaced Beckham's bending passes from the flank this season.

"They've been very accepting to me and very cool with me," Rogers said. "I'm just excited to get on the road with these guys and continue the season."

Aware that a whirlwind of attention is approaching, Rogers plans to lean on his faith. He also hopes his decision to use soccer as a platform for tolerance and acceptance leads more gay athletes to come out, even while his primary focus is on the game he has loved since his youth.

"You're just going to be treated the same as any other athlete," he said. "It's going to take time, but it's inevitable that the time will come when you're solely judged on your performance. That's going to happen. You can't put a time frame on it, but I think it's in the near future because I really have felt a shift in our society and acceptance in our sports world. I honestly think in the next few years, it's not going to be an issue."

Toronto mayor denies crack cocaine allegations

TORONTO (AP) ? Toronto Mayor Rob Ford denied Friday that he smokes crack cocaine and said he is not an addict after a video purported to show him using the drug. The mayor of Canada's largest city did not say whether he has ever used crack.

Ford did not take questions from reporters at a news conference at City Hall held after a week of silence and after close allies released a letter urging him to address the video. The video apparently shows Ford smoking crack.

"I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict of crack cocaine," he said before going on to criticize the media.

Ford had been ducking the media and his only comments before Friday on the scandal came a week ago, a day after the story broke, when he called the crack smoking allegations "ridiculous" and said the Toronto Star newspaper was out to get him.

Ford said he had kept quiet on the advice of his lawyer.

The video has not been released publicly and its authenticity has not been verified. Reports on gossip website Gawker and in the Toronto Star claimed it was taken by men who said they had sold the drug to Ford. The Associated Press hasn't seen the video.

The Star reported that two journalists had watched a video that appears to show Ford, sitting in a chair, inhaling from what appears to be a glass crack pipe. The Star said it did not obtain the video or pay to watch it. Gawker and the Star said the video was shown to them by a drug dealer who had been trying to sell it for a six-figure sum.

The Star also reported that Ford allegedly made a racist remark about the high school football students he coached.

"It is most unfortunate, very unfortunate, that my colleagues and the great people of this city have been exposed to the fact that I've been judged by the media without any evidence," Ford said.

City Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker said he was profoundly disappointed in the mayor's statement and called on Ford to resign. De Baeremaeker said he believes the reports about Ford's alleged drug use and believes Ford's tenure is over.

"I don't believe the mayor," he said. "He should resign and then go seek help."

De Baeremaeker said he's observed erratic behavior from the mayor.

"The mayor is just imploding," he said. "The mayor had an opportunity to acknowledge that perhaps he does have a problem, and to take a leave of absence, perhaps to take care of himself and his family, instead he went on the attack."

Other councilors said the mayor wasn't comprehensive enough and said the distraction clearly wasn't over.

Ford fired his chief of staff on Thursday. A statement from the mayor's office gave no reason for Mark Towhey's dismissal. Towhey, who was escorted from City Hall by security, would only say that he did not resign.

Ford was fired from his job as football coach at a Catholic high school on Wednesday for reasons unrelated to the scandal over the alleged crack video. Toronto Catholic District School Board spokesman John Yan said the decision to remove Ford as the head of Don Bosco Eagles Football program had to do with the comments the mayor made to the Sun TV Network in March that parents found offensive. Yan said Ford characterized the parent community as not caring about their kids, that the students were involved in gangs and guns and that if it weren't for him they would be in jail.

Ford has been embroiled in almost weekly controversies about his behavior since being elected in 2010, but these are the most serious allegations he's faced yet. The Toronto Star reported earlier this year that he was asked to leave a gala fundraiser for wounded Canadian soldiers because he appeared intoxicated.

During his campaign for mayor, Ford vehemently denied a 1999 arrest for marijuana possession in Florida, but later acknowledged it was true after he was presented with evidence. He pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and failing to give a breath sample to police.

While in office, he has been accused of flouting conflict of interest rules and making obscene gestures at residents from his car.

The controversy has drawn comparisons to the 1990 arrest of then-Washington Mayor Marion Barry, who was videotaped smoking crack cocaine in a hotel room during an FBI sting operation. Barry served six months in federal prison on a misdemeanor drug possession conviction and later won a fourth term as mayor in 1994.

Espresso 101: The Methods and Machines Behind the Perfect Shot

Espresso is a mysterious drink. Not many people really know what it really is, how it?s made, or even what it should taste like. We've all been lured into a haze of misunderstanding and misinformation by the likes of Starbucks, Nespresso, Krups, and countless other brands looking to make espresso easy and cheap. Don't take the bait. Espresso, done right, is wonderful. Here's how the best in the business do it.

    What is espresso?

Espresso is not type of coffee bean, or a type of roast. Espresso is simply a method, a way to brew coffee. In fact, any coffee can be brewed as espresso?though some types taste better than others.

Making espresso involves pushing hot water through a compact ?puck? of grounds at high pressure, usually at around 9 bar (9 times the atmospheric pressure at sea level). The reason you see bags of coffee labeled as espresso is either because its contents are pre-ground to a fine size that suits espresso brewing, or it is a blend that has been crafted to create a balance of flavors when brewed as espresso.

A delicate balance of man and machine

To brew great espresso, a confluence of events must occur that marries human judgment with mechanical precision. It starts with decisions made by the roaster. Will they be making a blend of different coffee types to create a balance of flavors, or will they use a single-origin bean to highlight an experience unique to that particular variety?

Once a bag of beans has found its way to a human person preparing a drink, it is up to that person to make sure the beans are fresh, meaning no more than 2 weeks from the roast date, and ground immediately before brewing. There are certain aromatics in ground coffee that will evaporate within 20 minutes of grinding, so quickness is paramount. The grind size will vary based on characteristics of the coffee such as age, bean variety, and roast-profile. Even at the highest level there is no secret formula, with adjustments being made according to taste. The coffee is then precisely dosed, compacted into a basket, or portafilter, and finally meets the mysterious espresso machine.

    Heat & Pressure

All espresso machines utilize boilers containing a heating element that brings the water to the proper temperature. The pressure to pull a shot is generated by either a piston (found in older manual machines), steam power (in modern low-end machines), or a motor-driven pump. Commercial machines use a rotary pump that keeps constant pressure, whereas smaller machines use a vibration pump that generates pressure only as the shot is being pulled.

The name of the game in a good espresso machine is stability. Any fluctuation in heat, even to the tune of a couple of degrees Farenheit, can alter the taste of the coffee and make it impossible to pull consistently good shots. High-end espresso machines rely on a few important mechanisms for maintaining heat and pressure throughout the brewing process.

The first must-have is a double boiler system, where one boiler heats water for the brew, and another heats water for the steam wand. The two processes have different temperature needs?212 F for steam, 200 F for espresso. Having separate boilers will ensure that neither process throws the other off.

The other important mechanism is a PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller. PID is a generic term for a controller that maintains a set value using control feedback loops. Many common devices use PIDs?a cruise control in a car might use one to maintain a certain speed based on calculating incremental changes over time. In espresso machines, the PID maintains constant water temperature, controllable to the degree. Without it, the heat level is prone to wide swings and makes consistency extremely difficult.

There are of course other aspects to a good espresso machine, mostly having to do with build quality, longevity, and ability to withstand the rigors of a commercial setting. The type of metal that the boilers are composed of, the pre-heating system featured, whether it is plumbed or reservoir-based?it all contributes to what is possible when you let the coffee flow.

    What should it taste like?

Whatever you've had in Starbucks, or from a pod, or in a deli, does not reflect even a fraction of what a well-made espresso tastes like. Therein lies the problem?the majority of casual coffee drinkers have never actually had a good shot, so they don?t know what to expect.

Espresso made from freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee, made on a commercial machine by someone who has paid close attention to the process, should taste rich and sweet. Each coffee has its own flavor profile?fruity, chocolatey, floral?but it should never taste burnt, ashy, bitter, or sour. While most blends are meant to be mellow and appeal to a broad audience, you might want to try a single-origin coffee something totally different. And remember, it can be an acquired taste. Don't give up if you don't like what you taste at first! Also, don't get hung up on the tasting notes you see in specialty cafes. Not only are they often out-of-date, they push you toward pre-conceived notions when you really should be seeing, and tasting, for yourself.

    Espresso at home

Trying to make good espresso at home is often fraught with buyer's remorse. It's easy to be seduced by the promise of a $100 machine advertising ?up to 15 bars of pressure!!? These machines lack pressure regulation that would maintain 9 bars of pressure throughout the whole shot (20-30 seconds). Nespresso and other pod machines are convenient, but cannot produce quality espresso. Not only do they lack the proper mechanics, but the coffee is of poor quality and pre-ground.

The first thing you need, no matter what machine you are using, is a good grinder. Without a good conical burr grinder that produces fine, consistent grounds, and can be precisely adjusted, your $5000 espresso machine will go to waste. At the lowest end, an espresso-capable grinder will run about $300, but many enthusiasts will tell you that you need to spend around $500 on something like a Baratza Vario to really dial in settings that are precise enough.

Lower cost machines feature a single boiler, and are sometimes driven by inadequate steam pressure rather than pump pressure. If you go this route, you will see wildly inconsistent results, and if you are making milk-based drinks, you'll have to wait in between brewing espresso and steaming milk so that the temperature can recover. Keep in mind, you can achieve good espresso with a quality single-boiler machine that is pump-driven, but it will require a great deal of attention and fiddling to get great results every time. A good one will cost around $600. Some people even mod their single boiler espresso machines by adding a PID controller themselves. A popular machine for this hack is the Rancilio Silvia (image to the left by Flickr user TonalLuminosity)

If you want something more robust, you could consider a machine with a heat-exchange (HX) system. These machines have one boiler, but will allow you to steam milk and pull a shot without delay. They're still prone to instability in temperature, though, especially if they idle too long. Even so, expect to pay over $1500 for an HX machine.

Finally, we come to double-boiler (DB) home espresso machines. These rigs are the best for a worry-free experience. They usually feature a PID, so you can dial in a shot temperature, and pull shot after shot, steaming milk at the same time, with reliable consistency. Until recently, double-boilers machines would run you upward of $2000.

    The Breville Dual Boiler

Most high-end espresso machines are Italian-made and imported, not to mention expensive. A couple of years ago, Breville?that of the Williams Sonoma ubiquity?decided to be bold and tackle serious espresso making with the release of a double-boiler model. The company claims it consulted with espresso experts and baristas in order to make a truly high-quality machine. We had a chance to test out the Breville BES900XL and were impressed with its capabilities. The Breville allows for tons of control over brewing, such as shot temperature, pre-infusion time, and pre-infusion pressure adjustment. It also has some really great conveniences such as a wheeled base and font-filling reservoir that you wouldn?t normally find on an Italian machine. It produces great espresso, provided you are grinding with a suitable burr grinder and playing with the variables to suit the coffee.

Many experienced baristas have recommended the Breville Dual-Boiler, but some still have reservations. The machine is about $1200, much cheaper than other comparable machines, which leads some to question the reliability of its parts. Will it last you 5, 10, 20 years? We don?t know. But Breville is definitely shaking things up by taking home espresso making seriously, as opposed to dumbing it down.

All this for one ounce of coffee?

For many, espresso, and coffee in general, is purely functional. A pick-me-up. Obsessing over things like mouthfeel, crema color, and grind size will always seem ridiculous to the vast majority. But once you get a taste of a truly remarkable espresso, it?s hard not to seek more.

Journeying to coffee shops, each with different beans, machines, and atmosphere is fun, but nothing is more satisfying than bringing the experience home and crafting something for yourself. Sadly, it is expensive, but technology is driving new solutions, especially with the huge upswing in coffee interest. There are Kickstarter projects and portable devices vying to make life easier for espresso drinkers. Still, the best methods remain in pumps and boilers, the age-old mechanics that give us the perfect shot.

Apple iWatch release pegged for late 2014 full of biometric goodness

Apple iWatch release rumours are back, with industry analysts predicting the heavily rumoured wrist-worn gadget will touch down in late 2014 brimmed with biometric technologies.

A device that has become the subject of much rumour and speculation in recent months, the Apple iWatch had previously been tipped to make an appearance this autumn, with latest reports now claiming an Apple iWatch release date will not be held until the end of next year, a decision that could see Apple fall behind its competitors.

As well as pointing to a later than expected launch, repeated Apple tipster and KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, speaking in a note to investors, has suggested the Apple iWatch will play host to a ?secure user identification mechanism? alongside biometric functionality.

A claim that falls in with recent Apple rumours, previous reports have suggested Apple could add a fingerprint scanner to the iPhone 6. According to Kuo, the iWatch biometric capabilities would see the wearable computer secured against undesirable access to private data.

Adding fuel to the fire of recent Apple iWatch rumours, Kuo has claimed that, as reported earlier this week, the Apple branded wristwear will feature a 1.5-inch touch panel display, seemingly dispelling past claimed that it would sport a wrap-around flexible screen offering.

Looking to clear up some uncertainties about the mooted Apple iWatch, Kuo?s note added: "Investors shouldn?t be misled by the word ?Watch?. We think iWatch will not be positioned as a time-telling device, nor as a device that displays information from other Apple products.?

He added: "We are positive on the iWatch because its wearable design is helpful for offering more secure user identification and biometrics functionality."

    Apple iWatch Rumours

Although it has been claimed that Apple has assigned a 100-strong team to work on the currently unconfirmed Apple iWatch, a team made up of ?managers, members of the marketing group, and software and hardware engineers who previously worked on the iPhone and iPad,? it is believed Apple is not alone in plotting wrist mounted computers.

With designs for a Samsung Galaxy Watch having previously leaked, LG recently failed to rule out getting back into the smartwatch sector, stating: ?We will look at any opportunities that are possible.?

Speaking with TrustedReviews on the company?s possible smartwatch plans, LG?s Head of Mobile Planning, Dr Ramchan Woo added: ?Any sort of opportunity we are looking at. It is not just simply yes, but it is simply not no. We are looking at different opportunities.?

Kenneth Chau, an assistant professor in the School of Engineering at UBC's Okanagan campus, is a key investigator among colleagues at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Maryland. Their work the development of a flat lens is published in the May 23 issue of the journal Nature.

Nearly all lenses whether in an eye, a camera, or a microscope are presently curved, which limits the aperture, or amount of light that enters.

"The idea of a flat lens goes way back to the 1960s when a Russian physicist came up with the theory," Chau says. "The challenge is that there are no naturally occurring materials to make that type of flat lens. Through trial and error, and years of research, we have come up with a fairly simple recipe for a spray-on material that can act as that flat lens."

The research team has developed a substance that can be affixed to surfaces like a glass slide and turn them into flat lenses for ultraviolet light imaging of biological specimens.

"Curved lenses always have a limited aperture," he explains. "With a flat lens, suddenly you can make lenses with an arbitrary aperture size perhaps as big as a football field."

While the spray-on, flat lens represents a significant advancement in technology, it is only an important first step, Chau says.

"This is the closest validation we have of the original flat lens theory," he says. "The recipe, now that we've got it working, is simple and cost-effective. Our next step is to extrapolate this technique further, explore the effect to the fullest, and advance it as far as we can take it."

The technology could change the way imaging devices like cameras and scanners are designed.
