Charlie Spoonhour won big wherever he went, and left 'em all smiling.

The popular, homespun coach who put Missouri State on the map with five NCAA tournament appearances and led Saint Louis to three more with a mixture of sharpshooting and tenacious defense known as Spoonball, died Wednesday after a two-year battle with a lung disease. He was 72.

"Charlie was one of a kind," Missouri Valley Conference commissioner Doug Elgin said. "He was magnetic, charismatic. Just an unforgettable character."

Spoonhour was diagnosed in 2010 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which required a transplant at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. He died in nearby Chapel Hill, N.C., said Chuck Harker, the funeral director at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill.

In 19 seasons as a Division I head coach, the last three at UNLV from 2001-04, Spoonhour compiled a record of 373-202.

"Coach Spoon was an incredible person," said Dave Rice, current head coach at UNLV and a former UNLV assistant under Spoonhour. "I learned so much from him about coaching, but more important, he taught us how to keep things in perspective and showed us how to be better people."

Spoonhour lost none of his popularity after ending his coaching career, serving as TV analyst for the Missouri Valley Conference, and was in high demand on the banquet circuit. Retired Missouri State athletics director Bill Rowe, who hired Spoonhour to his first Division I head coaching job, recalled a Will Rogers-like wit.

"Give him a napkin and four or five words and that's all it took," Rowe said. "He'd have the place in stitches."

Rick Majerus was well aware of Spoonhour's legacy when he was hired as Saint Louis coach. The Billikens were ranked for one week earlier this season, their first appearance in the Top 25 since Spoonhour's glory days in 1994.

"He had great rapport with his players, was an outstanding tactician and generally a great person," Majerus said. "He really loved the game."

Spoonhour built his reputation at Missouri State, then known as Southwest Missouri State, where he was 197-81 from 1983-92. Rowe interviewed a half-dozen candidates for the school's head coaching vacancy, but was impressed by Spoonhour's success at the junior college level and by his reputation as a strong recruiter.

"I had Charlie in my mind all the time," Rowe said. "As far as really getting the program moving, we couldn't have picked a better guy. It was a perfect fit. He was very, very popular right away and our crowds really picked up."

Missouri State planned a moment of silence during a pre-game tribute before its game against Wichita State on Wednesday night.

Saint Louis won just five games the season before Spoonhour arrived, but in his second season the Billlikens were 23-6 and ended a 27-year NCAA tournament drought by leaning on the outside shooting of guards Erwin Claggett, Scott Highmark and H Waldman, combined with stingy defense. The 1994-95 team, which also won 23 games and went to the second round of the NCAA tournament, set a school record with 284 3-pointers.

"What I always liked was we could play a team like Memphis, and Memphis would dunk two and just pull the goal down," Spoonhour recalled in 1996. "Then we'd hit two 3's and be up by two points. You could see them going, 'This doesn't seem right.' I always sort of liked that."

It wasn't run and gun at all. Spoonhour preached patience on offense and often stomped his feet to make sure players were paying attention at both ends of the floor.

"Defense was a big, big deal," Rowe said. "And if you were going to dunk, that was fine, but you'd better make it."

Spoonhour could be stern, but usually would leaven ire with cornpone criticism such as calling a player a "Hickory Nut Head." Following a 27-point loss at home against Cincinnati in 1998, Spoonhour deadpanned: "I would suggest we get out of here before the roof falls in."

During Saint Louis' heyday in the mid-90s, the Billikens played to consistent sellout crowds of 21,000 and students planted plastic spoons all over campus in tribute. Average attendance increased by about 10,000 fans.

"Charlie Spoonhour was a man of great character and integrity," said Rev. Lawrence Biondi, the school president. "I will always remember his positive personality, his energetic spirit and his deep devotion to his players."

Saint Louis' first-round victory over Minnesota in 1995 was the school's first in 43 years. The Billikens lost in the second round to a Wake Forest team led by future NBA star Tim Duncan. Saint Louis also went to the NCAA tournament in 1998 but freshman sensation Larry Hughes then jumped to the NBA, leaving a talent gap Spoonhour couldn't solve. He resigned in 1999, but kept the mood light.

"I am not sick, no matter how I look," Spoonhour said. "I'm not getting divorced. There's just a point when you have to get off the merry-go-round, and that point is now."

After compiling a 122-90 record in seven seasons at Saint Louis, Spoonhour retired briefly before returning to coaching at UNLV. He was 54-31 in three seasons, resigning with 10 games to go in 2003-04.

Spoonhour's son, Jay, is an assistant coach at UTSA. Jay Spoonhour was assistant coach under his father at Saint Louis and UNLV, and was 6-4 as interim head coach after Charlie Spoonhour stepped down.

Spoonhour will be inducted into the Valley Hall of Fame in March. Elgin said he spoke recently to Spoonhour, who had been excited about making the trip to St. Louis.

"He was probably one of the greatest teachers that I ever had the privilege to be involved with," said Kelby Stuckey, who played for Spoonhour at Missouri State from 1985-89. "The lessons he taught me helped me, not just on basketball court, but life in general."

The company today launched the ?Up2YOU? naming contest inviting cruisers to submit names for the company?s youth and teen programs, along with names for each of the new age groups.

First lady pushes Jay Leno to eat healthy hoods

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) ? Jay ate the veggies.

First lady Michelle Obama cajoled Jay Leno into nibbling on apples, sweet potato fries and a pizza made with eggplant, green peppers and zucchini on the "Tonight Show," breaking his long-held aversion for all-things-healthy in his diet.

Leno once told a magazine he hadn't eaten a vegetable since 1969, and he insisted he tasted his last apple in 1984. That didn't dissuade the first lady, who's promoting her "Let's Move!" campaign to get kids excited about fitness and healthy eating habits.

Earlier, Obama poked at him in a Twitter post, hinting she'd "get Jay to eat some veggies" on the NBC show.

He did.

"That does smell very good. I assume this is sausage-pepperoni," the comedian quipped as he eyed the pizza made with a whole-wheat crust.

She convinced Leno to dip an apple in honey made from beehives in the White House garden: "It will help it go down easier," she assured him.

"White House honey? That sounds bad," Leno told her. "You know, with a different president that could mean a whole different thing, 'a little White House honey.'"

The first lady is on a two-day swing through California where she'll promote her initiative while attending two events to help Democrats raise money for the upcoming elections.

She told Leno she's not doing anything special to prepare for what's expected to be a tough re-election campaign for her husband, President Barack Obama.

"You know, there's really no way to mentally prepare for it. You take each day as it comes," she said.

Republican Mitt Romney has been ridiculing the White House and might face the president in November, but the first lady graded the former Massachusetts governor's singing voice with something like a sly endorsement. Romney surprised supporters in Florida with an on-pitch version of "America the Beautiful" on Monday, and Leno asked the first lady for her opinion.

"It's beautiful," she said after a pregnant pause, with a laugh and raised eyebrows. "And it is America's song, and it's a song that's meant to be sung by every American," the first lady said in a taped appearance for the NBC show.

Leno told her, "That is right, regardless of political affiliation."

But she swooned over her husband's singing ? Obama took a brief turn as a soul singer earlier this month at a New York fundraiser, crooning a bar from an Al Green classic. She says he does a little Marvin Gaye, too.

"He does have a beautiful voice, and he sings to me all the time," she told Leno.

Predatory pythons shift Everglades ecosystem

As invasive snakes expand territory, some mammal populations drop by more than 90 percent

Giant snakes are eating their way through the Everglades, leaving a drastically changed ecosystem in their wake, a new study shows.

The snakes, many of which measure 10 to 16 feet, are called Burmese pythons. But make no mistake: Virtually all of the roughly 30,000 living in southern Florida were born in the Everglades. Ecologists now report that populations of mammals have begun plummeting throughout the pythons? expanding range. And the timing of these mammal losses matches the geographic spread of the snakes, which federal officials believe were initially released into the wild by snake fanciers, probably 15 to 30 years ago.

Raccoons, opossums, deer and other mammals, along with birds and gators, have all turned up in the stomachs of captured pythons, testifying to the snakes? varied appetite, notes ecologist Michael Dorcas of Davidson College in North Carolina. ?But until now, there hadn?t been any indication that the snakes were altering the ecosystem,? says Dorcas, who led the study.

The new data ?make a persuasive case for cause and effect,? says herpetologist J. Whitfield Gibbons of the Savannah River Ecology Lab in Aiken, S.C., who was not affiliated with the new analysis. ?The investigators take a convincing position that introduced predatory pythons are responsible for the decline in numbers of large- and medium-size mammals in the Everglades.?

With much of the roughly 6,000-square-kilometer Everglades National Park virtually inaccessible, the team of 11 university and federal scientists took an indirect approach to surveying the region?s mammal populations. Between 2003 and 2011, researchers cruised roads on 313 nights and compared the number of individuals in each species they saw per 100 kilometers traveled to rates witnessed along the same roadways over 51 nights in the 1990s ? before pythons had established local breeding populations.

As in the earlier survey, raccoons and Virginia opossums were the most commonly observed mammals, although sightings of each were down by more than 98 percent in the most recent survey. Counts were 94 percent lower for white-tail deer and bobcat sightings were down 87 percent. And in contrast to the earlier survey, scientists saw no rabbits or foxes. Rabbits had been among the most common mammals witnessed in the 90s.

Roadside sightings of these species remained unchanged between the two periods in areas outside the python range. In spots of recent python migration, mammal sightings were also down somewhat from a decade earlier, drops ranging from 20 to 80 percent, Dorcas? team reports online the week of January 30 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The new diminished mammal counts in python territory ?are pretty similar to what we found,? says Joshua Holbrook of Florida Atlantic University in Davie. A more circumscribed road-sampling survey he coauthored in 2010 in Florida Scientist turned up nine mammals over four nights: seven deer, a possum and an unidentified small mammal. On five nights, he and his colleagues saw none. Meanwhile, beyond the python?s range in the nearby Corbett Wildlife Management Area, he and Thomas Chesnes of Palm Beach Atlantic University sighted 40 mammals over nine nights.

?This study paints a stark picture of the real damage that Burmese pythons are causing to native wildlife and the Florida economy,? says U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. His agency announced new rules on January 17 that will ban the importation and interstate transport of Burmese pythons, yellow anacondas and three other invasive constrictors sold in the pet trade. All have been found in Everglades National Park.

With so many invasive constrictors already breeding in South Florida, research is now focusing on ways to limit their spread and better understand the prey they threaten. Although Burmese pythons need freshwater to survive, a team of biologists with the U.S. Geological Survey led by Kristen Hart in its Davie, Fla., lab showed that the snakes can apparently derive much of their needed moisture from the tissue of prey animals.

The team?s experiments suggest that python hatchlings can?t survive more than two months with access to only saltwater. But a pair of hatchlings was still alive after 200 days with access to only brackish water. And a yearling snake with access to only saltwater survived 7 months ? holding open the prospect that these adept swimmers could, if motivated, enter the marine realm and migrate long distances through seawater, the team reports in the Feb. 10 Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology. In fact, Burmese pythons have already been found eating endangered wood rats on Key Largo, off the mainland coast.
