Is Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' Video An Homage To 'NSYNC?

Addressing similarities to 'NSYNC's 'Girlfriend' clip, Bieber tells MTV News he's 'definitely' been influenced by Justin Timberlake.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

<P>It's easy to compare <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>'s <a href="/news/articles/1684446/justin-bieber-boyfriend-video.jhtml">"Boyfriend" video,</a> which premiered Thursday on MTV, to 'NSYNC's "Girlfriend" clip from a decade earlier.</P><P>The concepts are quite similar: Both videos depict laid-back parking-lot parties that go from sun-drenched afternoons to moonlit evenings, filled with fancy cars, pretty girls and hip-hop-influenced dance breaks.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Wanted 'Boyfriend' Video To Be 'Mature'" id="vid:765691" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Back in 2001, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/n_sync/artist.jhtml">'NSYNC</a> enlisted director Marc Klasfeld for their game-changing <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/nsync/14441/girlfriend.jhtml#artist=500956">"Girlfriend" clip</a> that helped launch them ahead in their career from tweeny idols to full-grown men. Now, as Bieber hopes to make the same leap into <a href="/news/articles/1682090/justin-bieber-justin-timberlake-maturity.jhtml">manhood</a>, he said that despite having tons of respect for Justin Timberlake, he didn't realize there were similarities between his Director X-directed video and the boy band's clip.</P><P>After the <a href="/news/articles/1684454/justin-bieber-boyfriend-mature-video.jhtml">"MTV First" premiere of "Boyfriend,"</a> MTV News' Sway Calloway asked Bieber whether he had seen the "Girlfriend" video: "I haven't seen it," he said. But, he admitted he's "definitely" been influenced by Timberlake. "He was young, and he did it, and he was really amazing and had such amazing music," Bieber shared. "I can't say that I would be upset when someone compares me to him."</P><P>But, this Justin notes that while there might be some similarities to that other Justin, he's hoping to put his own stamp on the music industry, adding, "I just feel like my music is going a completely different route, but ... hats go off to him."</P><P>As for the more grown-up version of Bieber fans are getting to glimpse in the clip, he shared that much like his Beliebers he's growing up and not afraid to express that. "I think it's super cool," he said. "I wanted to do something a little bit more mature."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="*NSYNC - &quot;Girlfriend&quot;" id="vid:14441" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P><i>Share your thoughts on Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" video in the comments below!</i></p>

One Year On, Passion Capital Proves Its Mettle As A Go-To Seed VC In Europe

128158v2-max-250x250Although it's a year this week since Passion Capital appeared on the tech scene in London, it feels like they have been around a lot longer. It was in July 2009 I sat on the sun-kissed roof of what became known as their White Bear Yard base in London's Clerkenwell, having had a tour of a vast empty warehouse space which three noted tech angels planned to fill with their invested startups. Unlike one or two other tech angels I knew, these guys were something of a breed apart. A laid-back German ex-DJ who had killed it in ecommerce, a cool-calm-collected Brit veteran of the Internet and a former Valley maven who had seen the early days of Skype. We expected interesting things from these three musketeers and we got it. Many of their early investments are now seen as Passion Capital portfolio companies, but in truth, whatever the brand they work under, the special sauce that Eileen, Robert and Stefan brings to the party is the essential ingredient.

PoP Video peripheral turns iPod touches and iPhones into pico projectors for $99

PoP Video peripheral turns iPod touches and iPhones into pico projectors for $99

While it may not be the first time we've come across such a concept, this PoP Video add-on is certainly quite different than, say, WooWee's Cinemin Swivel -- and significantly cheaper, too. The PoP Video pairs up with iPod touches (3rd / 4th generation) and iPhones (4 / 4S) via Apple's proprietary 30-pin connector, essentially turning your device into an unorthodox pico projector. According to PoP's site, the 3.5 ounce peripheral's capable of 960 x 540 video output and can give you up to two hours of "playtime" on a single charge -- achieved by way of micro-USB. It all wouldn't be worth it without the free iOS app, though, which lets folks tinker with settings and do what it's intended to do: project videos, pics as well as browsing within Safari. The $99 PoP Video is up for pre-order now, and you can get a quick glimpse of the accessory in action just past the break.

T-Mobile officially adds Prism to its budget lineup on May 6th for $20

Image

No surprise here, but T-Mobile has been prepping a low-end Android phone called the Prism for quite some time now, and it's finally time for the little guy to make its official debut. With a 3.5-inch HVGA display, 3.2MP fixed-focus camera and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), it won't be the stuff dreams are made of. The CPU is also unspecified, which leads us to believe that T-Mo is leaving it out of the talking points for a reason -- yesterday's leak indicated that we can expect it to be 600MHz. That said, plenty of potential buyers wanting an inexpensive smartphone may be easily persuaded by its $20 price on contract (with a $50 mail-in rebate) or $150 without any sort of commitment. The Huawei-made Prism will make its first appearance at Best Buy on May 6th, followed by Walmart on the 9th and official retail channels on the 23rd. We have a press release awaiting you after the break, so take a peek if it interests you.
