Free Music App Brings Top YouTube Songs to Your iPhone

Vignesh Ramachandran

Digital music subscription services have brought us the ability to stream millions of songs on our smartphones, but generally the good ones cost the equivalent of at least a couple Starbucks lattes a month. A new alternative lets you do the same, without forking over any cash.

No pennies needed for Music Tube [iTunes link], an app available for iOS devices, which lets you listen to and watch music videos from YouTube's huge swath of content. The app also works on the iPad.

Search by genre, create playlists and see what songs make the top lists in various countries. Songs can even be cached on your device for quicker access the next go around.

In the world of music apps, you could think of Music Tube as a free alternative to digital music?subscription?services, minus the sleek interfaces and guaranteed high quality bit-rates that others might offer. Users are taking notice, however, and as of Wednesday afternoon, Music Tube was the #5 Top Free iPhone App overall on iTunes and in the #1 spot in the music subcategory (beating out Pandora, Spotify and iHeartRadio).

Music Tube may not be up to par with?music service powerhouses like Spotify Premium, but hey ? it's free.
