Family members, friends and classmates of Hogan Teem, a Clayton High School senior who collapsed and died last week during a baseball workout, will gather Tuesday afternoon to celebrate his life at a 3 p.m. memorial service at Clayton's First Baptist Church.?
Teammates said Teem, 17, collapsed during an offseason workout after approaching his coach. Emergency personnel performed CPR before transporting him to the hospital, where he later died.?
David Teem, Hogan's father, said his son died of a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle can become thick, making it harder for blood to leave the heart. David Teem said Hogan never showed any sign of the condition before he collapsed Thursday.?
Additional counselors were available at Clayton High School Friday, helping classmates deal with Teem's death. Teammates said Teem's positive outlook both on and off the field was contagious.?
"He would always find a way to brighten your day no matter what," teammate Nathan Lee said. "Even in baseball and everything going on outside the lines, outside the field, (it) didn't matter because Hogan gave 110 percent. He made you want to give more toward your game."
Following Tuesday's memorial service, Teem will be buried at Pinecrest Memorial Park.
"Clayton High lost a great young man," said Principal Clinton Eaves in a statement Friday. "Clayton High School expresses their sincere wishes for the family. This was an outstanding student. He gave 100 percent in all that he did. He was devoted to his family, friends, and teammates."
